A MOTHER sobbed and hugged her son after he was found guilty of murdering his 15-year-old brother by setting fire to the family home.

The teenager sat in the dock at Sheffield Crown Court flanked by his mother and father as they awaited the verdict. His mother, who was a prosecution witness and was seriously injured in the fire, rested her cheek on her son's shoulder and comforted him.

The boy, who was 14 at the time of the fire, told friends at school that he was going to set his house on fire because he hated his mum.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stood as the verdicts - guilty of murder and arson with intent to endanger life - were read out. As he was told he could sit he fell into his mother's arms. They held each other until court adjourned. His father also comforted him.

The judge, Mrs Justice Cox, had asked that there was no sound from the public gallery as the verdict was given.

Six people were trapped upstairs in the Wombwell house when the teenager set the house on fire on November 3 . He poured white spirit in the hallway, up the stairs and on the front door.
