A SCHOOL whose SAT’s results led to an investigation by education experts is having £1.6m of investment to improve standards.
Athersley North Primary will under go a major rebuilding programme after being warned it faced closure because of poor results.
Consultants from the Department for Education and Skills were drafted in last year and told staff if standards didn't improve the school would be taken out of council control.
Now plans have been drawn up to try to avoid closure and create a better environment for the 280 pupils.
Works include an improved foundation unit, extension to four classrooms, relocation of the computer suite, several group teaching areas, a behavioural unit, new staff room, class planning and prep areas for teachers, offices for headteacher and deputy head, new entrance and administration areas and refurbished and disabled toilets and new library.
The nursery will be demolished, a new play area created and there will be ground heat pumps, solar panels and water recycling.
