Barnsley's winless run stretched to five games as Ipswich netted a late leveller at Oakwell.
The Reds looked as though they had bounced back from successive losses with a strong second half display at Oakwell but Tom Lawrence's injury time leveller broke their hearts.
Paul Heckingbottom made three changes with Tom Bradshaw, Gethin Jones and Adam Hammill starting in place of Callum Elder, Alex Mowatt and Ryan Kent.
The first effort on goal came from Adam Armstrong but his effort from the edge of the box was held onto by Ipswich 'keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
The striker blew a chance from much closer moments later when he diverted Matty James' volley over the bar from just six yards.
Adam Davies pulled off a double save at the other end, first from David McGoldrick's low effort and then Cole Skuse's rebound.
Armstrong again tried his luck again from distance but it went wide. Similarly, Josh Scowen put his effort wide from the same sort of distance.
James then volleyed over from Hammill's free kick.
Ipswich were just inches from going in at the break a goal up but McGoldrick's cross was turned just wide by Angus MacDonald.
The Reds started the second half brightly with Marley Watkins causing problems for the Ipswich defence before he fired a tame free kick at goal.
Grant Ward, who netted a hat-trick against Barnsley on the opening day, came on for Town and had a shot deflected behind for a corner.
Barnsley went ahead on 58 minutes when Watkins was set free by James and he held off the defence before slotting by Bialkowski.
James almost struck a second but his long-range volley whistled just wide.
Ipswich tried to respond but were being restricted to long-range efforts with McGoldrick firing over and Lawrence shooting straight at Davies.
Hammill had a late chance to wrap up the win after being slipped in by substitute Ryan Williams but his shot was palmed out by Bialkowski.
Ipswich pinched a point in the final minute of three minutes added on when Brett Pitman's chip found Lawrence at the back post to finish.
