A SCRAP metal dismantler says that objectors to a plant in Wath-upon-Dearne have nothing to fear from the site.
Residents of Dunford Court have set up a campaign to call a halt to plans by C Soar & Sons for a workshop to deal with hazardous waste at the bottom of their gardens.
“It’s a lot of screaming over nothing,” said company director Colin Soar.
“We have sold one of our two Barnsley sites and are transferring the operation to Wath. It’s as simple as that.”
However, residents fear their health will be at risk if there is a leakage of hazardous waste, which will include PCBs (chlorinate biphenols), mercury and asbestos, into the environment. They have urged people to submit objections to Rotherham Council in writing or by signing a petition.
Alan Smith, 46, of Dunford Court said that two people have spoken to the company.
“One was told that it would be for white goods only, but the other was told that stuff would be coming from Sizewell. The biggest threat will be from the incinerator and flooding from Brook Dyke which runs alongside the boundary fence.”
