THE first barrel of award-winning Barnsley Bitter has rolled out of brewery.

Acorn Brewery produces the cask-conditioned ale and £250,000 has been invested in new premises on the Aldham industrial estate - just round the corner from the original brew-house at Mitchell's enterprise centre.

Brewer Dave Hughes says the move has doubled the brewery's production capacity now it has taken over the 6,200 sq ft brewery.

The Aldham site was only chosen after a deal to buy equipment from the Blackpool Brewery fell through.

Dave said: "It was frustrating that we could not brew more beer. Now we have the resources to take on new customers."

Wombwell-brewed Barnsley Bitter is now delivered to 300 pubs and the new brewery should be able to produce 100 barrels a week.
