A GROUP of pupils from Darton College clubbed together to buy an unusual French First World War helmet adorned with a Barnsley Pals badge.
The 45 pupils were on an emotional tour of the battlefields in France and Belgium when they helped assistant principal Sean Guy to buy the helmet which will be put on display at school.
“I paid 100 Euros although I think I got a very good deal,” said Mr Guy. “I asked the guide we had on the Somme about whether there might be any question about its authenticity being a French helmet and English regiment badge - he said that it was uncommon but not unheard of for British officers to do that in 1915 and 1916.”
It was the school’s third annual visit to the battlefields. Pupils also took part in the nightly Menin Gate ceremony outside Ypres and many visited the graves of their relatives who they had researched before going.
