PROBLEMS with street drinkers, drug users and boy racers at a town centre car park appear to have slackened off since it was ‘shut’ by police.

The privately-owned Peel Parade multi-storey car park was shut by police for three months to anyone not using it legitimately following a catalogue of problems which left customers intimidated and was damaging the trade of nearby businesses.

They all said problems had become much worse since it stopped being a manned car park several years ago and pay and display machine were brought in.

Sgt Matt Wood, who heads the town centre policing team, told the Chronicle there has been massive decrease in incidents and good feedback from car park customers and businesses since the closure order was put in place. He said a major difference had been made because the car park is being manned again.

“People have told us they feel a lot safer which is what we want,” Sgt Wood said.
