TWO people were seriously injured when they were stopped by police and were then knocked over by another police car.
The collision left a man, 40, fighting for his life after he suffered serious head and leg injuries.
He was left in a 'critical' condition and a woman, 36, also suffered less serious leg injuries. Both were taken to Barnsley Hospital but the man was transferred to Sheffield Hallamshire.
The incident occurred when West Yorkshire police were carrying out 'routine enquiries' in Staincross at about 12.20am on Sunday. Officers were talking to a group of four people in Wakefield Road when a South Yorkshire police vehicle collided with two of the group.
The marked car was travelling towards Wakefield on an unconnected journey.
Wakefield Road was closed for several hours on Sunday.
Insp Michael Green, of West Yorkshire police, said: "Neither police vehicle - the West Yorkshire vehicle which was stationery or the South Yorkshire police vehicle which was in collision with the two persons - were involved in any pursuit.
"The West Yorkshire police were merely dealing with routine matters at the time."
West Yorkshire police's professional standards department and the Independent Police Complaints Commission are investigating. South Yorkshire police were unable to comment.
