Andy Yiadom is back at Oakwell and could play tomorrow after failing to agree terms with Huddersfield Town – but he may still leave Barnsley before the end of the transfer window.
The Reds accepted a bid for the 25-year-old Ghana international, who missed both their games this week, but the move then broke down amid speculation about a failed medical.Head coach Paul Heckingbottom says he is unsure if there will be further bids, but the Reds – who brought in another full-back in Dimitri Cavare yesterday – are clearly willing to sell Yiadom while there are understood to be several other clubs interested in him.
"He's back with us," said Heckingbottom, who also added that contract negotiations could reopen after Yiadom rejected a deal this summer.
"The thing with Huddersfield is not moving forward. Until something changes, he is one of our players. We gave the deal every possible chance because we were happy with the finances. But it has broken down and he could be involved at Sheffield United (tomorrow). He's disappointed but he's level-headed and he knows he got that opportunity through hard work so he will start working hard again."
Yiadom, who angered fans by conducting an unsanctioned interview about his desire to leave the club, will now have competition for his place at full-back. Cavare, who played at Oakwell in pre-season while on trial at Huddersfield, joined the Reds from Stade Rennais for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal. The right-back is very unlikely to be registered in time for tomorrow's game. Jason McCarthy and Matty Pearson have started the season well at full-back while Zeki Fyers will be another option on the left when he returns from injury.
Heckingbottom said of Cavare: "Huddersfield wanted to take him but they chose Yids above him which gave us an opportunity to step in and take Dimi. That is great for us because we've got Yids as well so we have the best of both worlds as it stands at the minute. We have got a lot of options at full-back but sometimes you get good opportunities which you have to seize regardless. Dimi has the ability to play at a higher level, he's a really good athlete and he's really hungry and driven. His power, athleticism and pace are what make him stand out."
Cavare, 22, has worked with Barnsley's French chief executive Gauthier Ganaye at Lens in the past. He is the second French player to join in the last week, following striker Mamadou Thiam who will be taking English lessons along with Cavare.
Heckingbottom said: "Dimi and Gauthier had a working relationship before and know each other personally which helped us massively. He's shown a desire to play for us because of the personal touch and knowledge of the CEO which is fantastic. Having a French CEO is a big attraction to French players."
Heckingbottom is also looking outside England for a new striker in Swansea City's Oliver McBurnie, for whom he says there has been a deal in place for a loan since the end of last season. The Premier League Swans have been keeping hold of the 21-year-old as a back-up to their other strikers.
Heckingbottom said: "It's been the worst kept secret that he's someone we have been interested in. The player would like to come and Swansea are happy with it but we're just waiting for it to happen. It's been agreed for three months. He adds something different. His biggest asset is that he's a good finisher."
Heckingbottom is still hoping to bring in several players before the transfer deadline at the end of this month. e added: "I don't want to be sat about on deadline day waiting for things to happen. I want to get things done before then. Look at at all the players we've sold, there's money there."
Barnsley have been linked with two central midfielders in Jason Lowe, a free agent after leaving Blackburn, and Aston Villa's Gary Gardner. Heckingbottom told the Chronicle he was not trying to sign either.
