A COMMUNITY group has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award after putting the community spirit back into Worsbrough.

Dove Valley Events, the group responsible for bringing the Worsbrough Country Fair back to the village after a two year hiatus, has been working to break down community barriers since 2015.

With a particular focus on young mums, children and the elderly and isolated, volunteers have worked tirelessly to create a sense of community and unite the many local groups which exist in Worsbrough.

After struggling to get local people involved in the many activities on offer, a recent fun day saw more than 80 children attend, with the country fair drawing in a crowd of more than 2,000.

Upon learning Dove Valley Events had been nominated for a Community Group award, chairman John Clake, said: "I think everyone will be very pleased. "We have put quite a lot of work into it over the last two years.

"We have quite a lot of volunteers register their interest recently.

"At the moment we're working with the Ward Alliance in the Bank End area and have a family fun day coming up with bouncy castles. "The last one was well attended and we're hoping for a similar turnout."

Although the recent country fair was a success, John said the group is looking to learn lessons from this year's event.

"We got some Lottery funding for the fair last year.

"We had £10,000 and £2,000 from Tesco.

"We made enough money from the event to make sure it runs next year, but we would like to see it be a success nest year keep it going and make sure it runs every year. "We can't rely on Lottery grants.

"We've learned some lessons and we'll be discussing them at our next meetings.

"We had volunteers putting tents up at 10pm on Friday before the fair as not many turned out. "Next year we need more volunteers to help."

The next project Dove Valley Events will be taking on is a networking event to unite Worsbrough's 35 local history and community groups, and ensure they work together.
