AN RSPCA worker says the number of stray and abandoned animals in Barnsley is the worst she has known.

Kath Wilkinson from Barnsley RSPCA says the organisation hasn’t room to take care of any more and with Christmas approaching the situation will get worse.

She said: “Even my friends are staying away because I am asking them to take a cat in.

“If the inspectors come with anything I have no room so I dread the phone ringing. Everywhere is at bursting point and the people who look after the dogs are the same.”

• Kath will be holding a stall outside Bon Marche in the Alhambra Centre today, 9.30am to 4pm with details of some of the animals available for adoption.
