WORK to help prevent a repeat of the 2007 floods in Barnsley has been approved by councillors, with a new strategy to set out what needs to be done in future.

Because it is a blueprint, rather than an order for specific schemes, there are no further costs involved in adopting the flood risk strategy.

Some physical work has already been done, such as a flood prevention scheme to reduce the risk of problems in communities including Darton and Low Valley at Darfield, and measures to keep flood water out of individual properties at Lundwood and Bolton on Dearne.

The overall aim of the strategy is to improve flood resilience in the district and ensure there is effective recovery work during and after any flood events which do occur.
