A HIGH Street shop is set to close to make way for Wombwell’s third licensed betting shop.
Done Brothers, which trades as Betfred, has applied to the council for a licence to open a betting shop in the unit where Wise Owl Discount Store is now.
If the licence application is approved the shop will close after Christmas, but if it is rejected, there could be hope for Wise Owl.
Area manager Barry Berger said: “If it doesn’t go ahead, the company would definitely be in a position to keep Wise Owl trading if the landlord will allow it. But it's out of our hands. It’s up to the landlord and the council now.
“We would love to stay open in Wombwell. The shop is doing well and I think we would be missed if we were to close.”
Andy Cole, of Cole Brothers Cafe and chairman of the High Street Committee, said: “We totally object to this. Wombwell doesn’t need another bookies.
“I hope the local councillors can put it to a stop. The High Street needs shops like Wise Owl.”
