ELSECAR Heritage Railway will need people to vote in their millions to help it win £80,000 from a tv lottery competition decided by the public vote.

The registered charity will go buffer to buffer with seven other finalists in ITVs ‘The People’s Millions’ to secure the grant which would fund a long-awaited track extension to Cortonwood retail park.

Chairman Malcolm Banks said he could see the light at the end of the tunnel so long as the public got onboard.

He said: “We’re delighted to get this far but now we need the people to get behind us and vote.

“We’re the only heritage railway in South Yorkshire and if we don’t get the vote then we wont get the brass.

“It is living history and it’s important to the area to preserve our pit and railway heritage. We’re proud to be from South Yorkshire and hopefully the viewers will be too and vote for us. It would really open the railway up.”

The organisation, ran solely by volunteers, applied for the competition in July and were chuffed to get through to the final eight this week.
