MORE than 25 fire-fighters battled a blaze at a Netto on Sunday afternoon.

Crews from Barnsley, Royston, Brampton and Tankersley stations were called to the Lundwood store just half an hour after it had closed.

Flames were seen shooting through the roof as they approached.

An aerial platform was used to douse the flames from above while fire-fighters broke through metal shutters to tackle the blaze from within.

It is thought that the fire started in a bin which was brought inside when the Pontefract Road supermarket shut at 4pm and smouldering took hold after staff went home.

There was extensive smoke, fire and water damage and builders were called onto the site to make it structurally safe.

A Netto spokesman said: “Our team is now working to assess the extent of the damage and identify the steps required to reopen the store as soon as possible.”

In the meantime staff will be transferred to other branches across the borough, including the new Athersley store which had to be rebuilt due to a fire.
