THE DISTRAUGHT parents of a 14-year-old girl, who was thought to have died of meningitis, have now been told she had a hairline fracture of her skull.

Doctors initially believed Amy Wood, of Allendale Road, Hoyland died of the killer bug and also tested her brother. But a post-mortem revealed the injury and an inquest will now be held.

The Chronicle has learned that Amy fell and banged her head while out with friends at the Forge recreation ground in Elsecar a week before she died. She had been drinking and had to be carried home by her brother Tim, 16, her dad Melvyn said yesterday.

"She was drinking, we tried to stop it by stopping her pocket money but she just used her school dinner money. We knew she had fallen down but we didn't know she had banged her head and the morning after she was OK, " he said. • Full story in this week's Chronicle
