A WOMBWELL teenager is hoping to go on a pilgrimage to Australia to meet the Pope at World Youth Day next summer.
Bernadette Goddard, 17, of Aldham House Lane, has been asked by the Hallam Diocese of the Catholic Church to represent the parishes of Wombwell St Michael’s, Goldthorpe Sacred Heart and Hoyland St Helen’s at the world’s biggest gathering of young people in Sydney next July.
She said: “I think it’s unlikely I’ll meet the Pope personally, because there will be 50,000 other people there.”
Bernadette must raise £2,000 herself if she is to go on the trip. She is starting to plan her own fund-raising events.
Her first event is a quiz night tonight at St Michael’s Church Hall starting at 7pm. Jimmy Hardy, landlord of the Alma and Royal Oak, has provided some prizes for the quiz.
