THE lost loos of Thurnscoe have become a problem which refuses to go away for Barnsley Council — but there could be a solution.
Public toilets are non-existent in the town but a man who has returned after 30 years in Canada wants new ones built and has collected hundreds of signatures in support.
“I've asked for a rough estimate as to the cost of building a public toilet block and have been assured that it could be about £250,000,” said Neil Wilson, Dearne area forum officer, who has been looking into the matter.
“The council could not even consider that kind of money so if a project went ahead it would have to be community funded.
“We've also looked at putting one on the Houghton Road sports field but there are restrictive covenants on the land relating to sports use. Another alternative is one of the self-cleaning free-standing continental toilets.”
