FISHERMEN, walkers and cyclists are to benefit from a new project which will complete the regeneration of the Dearne Valley with environmental improvements for recreation.

“Industrialisation has gone and we want to work with local people and organisations to renew the green assets of the valley,” Stuart Jenkinson of the Environment Agency told the Dearne Forum in Thurnscoe and the Wentworth North Assembly in Wath-upon-Dearne.

“Health in the Dearne Valley is worse than average for Yorkshire and much worse than the national average so this will be important in improving activities.”

The Environment Agency, Natural England and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds have formed a partnership to be known as the Dearne Valley Green Heart Project and want to work with local people.

The Dearne is the main beneficiary of the first part of the project which will extend from Cudworth and Grimethorpe in the north to where the Dearne meets the Don at Mexborough in the east and includes Wombwell and Darfield.
