MORE than 100 houses could be built on the 18-acre site of a Wombwell factory which was 'knee deep' in water during the floods last June.

A spokesman for Windowstyle, which employs 600 workers, confirmed there are plans to move the production plant from the Station Road Industrial Estate to somewhere bigger within the borough.

The Chronicle understands an outline planning application for more than 100 houses on the site has been submitted to the council by Chris Carr Associates.

WIndowstyle was flooded on June 22 and lost a day's production. A press release from the company at the time said staff built barriers with sandbags while 'in knee deep and even deeper flood water'.

Pete Bradshaw, of Stonyford Road, chairman of the Low Valley Residents Flood Committee, is concerned that building houses there will probably mean building the land up higher to reduce the flood risk to the new houses, and he thinks thinks that will make matters worse for the existing houses.

He said: "It's going to cause even more havoc. It was flooded there so how high are they going to have to build the houses to stop them flooding, and what's that going to do to us? We strongly believe the new housing estate along the Dove caused us problems last year."
