BARNSLEY MP Jeff Ennis says he will keep pressure on the government's education department over admissions to top universities.

He is unhappy that Oxford and Cambridge still take a third of students from 100 'elite' schools, 80 per cent of which are private.

Mr Ennis said: "That is wrong. The government really needs to look at the possibility of some kind of positive discrimination as a way of selecting students from poorer backgrounds.

"We have to look at ways and means of getting kids from our schools to go to university and set their sights higher and go for Oxford and Cambridge. It is an issue I am not going to let drop."

In Parliament he asked education minister, Bill Rammell, what could be done to drag the two institutions into the 21st century.
