ELDERLY Great Houghton residents are much happier now they have been told their homes will not be demolished until they have a new building just yards away.
The 28-flat Sandhill Court housing complex is earmarked for demolition because it does not meet modern standards.
But residents have been told in a meeting with the council they will not move until a new building is completed.
Dolly Rose, 79, said: "The tears of sadness have turned to gladness, that's for sure."
Dolly has no family and described Sandhill Court and its residents as 'her life'.
She had feared she would have to move to another village, or to a bungalow where she would have to live on her own. She said: "They have listened to what we wanted, and it couldn't have been any better for us. I went up to Steve Jagger from the council, shook his hand and thanked him for giving me my life back."
