DICKIE Bird gave his sports charity £1,500 to start it off and issued a loan of a further £5,000 when it ran into difficulties a few months later, it has been claimed.

The revelation has come from former chief executive of the Dickie Bird Foundation Keith Harrison.

He told the Chronicle he wants his knowledge to be made public because it has been widely reported that the amounts Dickie donated to the foundation were much higher.

Dickie, who at the launch said he had handed over 'a lot' of money, this week said he was reluctantly unable to comment on the matter for legal reasons.

Foundation spokesman Les Smith is not allowed to discuss details of private donations as it is information that only Dickie can disclose.

But he did say that whenever the foundation needs memorabilia for an auction Dickie provides it.
