SHOPS and businesses are being urged to take part in this year's summer carnival by decorating their premises.

The town centre management team wants to create a carnival atmosphere and events start at 10am and continue until 4pm.

The mayor's parade begins at 2pm. Organisers expect about 3,000 from schools, community groups and bands, to be involved in the parade.

Some town centre roads will be closed. From 9am to 5pm, May Day Green, Cheapside, Queen Street, Peel Square and New Street and from 1pm to 3.30pm, Regent Street, Wellington Street, Pitt Street, Market Hill, Sadler Gate, St Mary's Gate, Church Street, Eastgate, County Way, Eldon Street, Peel Street, Graham's Orchard and Lancaster Gate.

Events and promotions officer Matthew Mitchell asked businesses to avoid having deliveries at those times.

The carnival attracts about 10,000 to the town centre.
