MEMBERS of the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery experienced a once in a life time opportunity when they met the Queen at Buckingham Palace last week.

Pam Dutton, 65, and her granddaughter Hannah Moran, 18 were invited to the Palace after the group received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service.

Mrs Dutton said: "We won the award in 2006 and were invited to the annual garden party.

"Hannah and I couldn't attend but were delighted when we found out that the Queen was putting on an evening function for those who had been unable to make it.

"Because there were only 324 people there rather than over 7,000 at the garden party we were able to speak to the Queen, Prince Philip and the Duke of Gloucester."

The women explained the work the group did in Wombwell Cemetery, litter picking, putting poppies on the war memorials and sponsoring the new railings around the grounds.

The Queen told them she thought that it was lovely to see local volunteers and that it was wonderful to have a young person who was really interested in volunteer work.
