MEMBERS of a working men's club who took on the might of their brewery have won a legal battle which went all the way to the House of Lords.

Ward Green WMC can now buy the £120,000 clubhouse it has used for decades.

The £35,000 six-year legal battle ended at the House of Lords - the highest court - when Law Lords ruled in favour of the club's trustees and said Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Ltd could not appeal against the decision.

A committee meeting was held on Wednesday to discuss the matter. Last night members were still waiting for written confirmation to come through from their solicitors and the House of Lords.

But secretary Harry Hunter said once news arrived the committee could start planning a big celebration. "There will be a party but we're holding off at the moment. Everything is in abeyance."
