A FORMER Royston man has been ordained as a priest at Chichester Cathedral.

Father Gareth Jones, 26, formerly of Chevet Rise, will now take up the post as curate of St Michael’s and All Angels Church at Brighton, where he will live with wife Sharyl.

Family and friends came from far and wide to join the celebrations with his nan travelling from Kent, his mother in law from Florida and the Bishop of Niagara flew from Canada.

Father John Hudson from Royston Parish Church also attended the ceremony as he has supported Gareth in his vocation.

Gareth used to work in the building and holiday trade and got his calling six years ago.

He went on to do two years at St Matthew’s at Westminster before being selected for ordination and then did his training at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield West Yorkshire.

At the same time he was studying for a BA (Hons) degree in Theology at Leeds University.

Parents Leslie, 67 and mum Sylvia 59, said: “It was a lovely day and all the family went down to Chichester for the occasion.”
