A HORSE rider from Hoyland has called for action after nearly being hit by a speeding car.

Vandella Kitchen, 40, from Manor Way, was crossing the section of the transpennine trail on the A6195 that runs past Morrisons at Cortonwood when the incident occurred.

Miss Kitchen said: "The trail ends on one side of the Dearne Valley Parkway and starts again on the other meaning we have to cross a busy road.

"On this occasion a car was coming around the round the round-a-bout too fast had to swerve to miss me."

This is one of many 'near misses' Vandella has faced over the past two years and she feels that finally something should be done.

She said: "All I want to see are some signs warning drivers that horses may cross or special traffic lights. Cars scare the horses which could be fatal to the rider or the driver."

A spokesman for Barnsley council said: "The crossing of the Trans Pennine Trail at Cortonwood is the responsibility of Rotherham Council who, having been made aware of the issue, have agreed to investigate it."
