A DISABLED woman was left terrified by a gang of teenagers who hurled abuse and assaulted her as she sat helpless in her wheelchair.
Elizabeth Sykes, 54, was attacked between the Factory Outlet shop and G and Ts bar as she made her way home to Millhouses Street after a shopping trip.
She was approached by a youth on a bike who tried to push her out of her mobility scooter. He was joined by another six or seven who surrounded her and yelled abuse.
Elizabeth, who suffers from emphysema, liver cirrhosis and a muscle wasting disease, said the abuse went on for ten minutes.
She said the youth swore at her and said: "What are you going to do about it? You're nothing but a disabled."
Then gang jeered at her as she tried to get away shouting: "You disabled bastard, you're nothing but a cripple."
She said: "I was absolutely frightened to death. I felt so intimidated, It was awful. They were swearing at me and calling me names - I just wanted to get away as fast as I could."
The attack happened on Monday at 1.30pm. The first youth was riding a black bike and described as about 17-years-old.
He was wearing a black tracksuit with a distinctive white stripe across the front and a baseball cap. PC Craig Sumpter from Hoyland's safer neighbourhood team described those responsible as the 'lowest of the low.'
