VANDALS have ripped apart a monument on the trans-Pennine trail and damaged a bowling club pavilion.

The brick monument is at the rear of Hanson's Stairfoot brickworks and commemorates the 'Mansfield marine band' - a layer of fossil bearing clay laid down when Barnsley was covered by a prehistoric equatorial forest.

The monument was built eight years ago and has occasionally been sprayed with graffiti but last weekend yobs smashed it to pieces.

Hanson's works manager Dave Mason was alerted to the damage on Monday morning.
