AN EXERCISE group that has been working up a sweat for over 50 years closed this week after numbers dwindled.

The pensioners decided to call it a day after organiser Iris Birkinshaw became too ill to run the weekly sessions.

The 83-year-old said the sessions had turned more into social gatherings as the members got older. She said: "We used to have over 20 members at one point but now we're down to about nine. Let's face it, we're all now pensioners and it became more of a get-together.

"We used to do exercise to music and it was quite popular with the ladies. One of the ladies didn't know her left from her right so we put it on her shoes."

The group met at the old scout hall in Pilley and moved to the welfare hall in Tankersley before settling at the Anglican church, Pilley.

Iris said: "We had some laughs and good times so I'm sorry it has finished."
