A STAINCROSS road, said to be one of the most dangerous in the country, is to get a speed camera in an effort to slow down drivers.

The camera will be installed on the A61 Wakefield Road, the scene of two more accidents in the past week.

Coun Roy Miller said he and Coun John Parkinson had been working to make improvements on the road for some time and were extremely pleased.

“This is a dangerous road. We have reduced the speed limit and now we’ve got this speed camera we hope it will slow the traffic and reduce the number of fatalities.

“The camera is not about fundraising or making money - it is about road safety.”

Last year the three mile stretch from Barnsley golf club to Newmillerdam was limited to 50mph instead of the national speed limit of 60mph.

This was after five years of campaigning by Coun Miller who described the stretch near the golf club as a death trap.
