VILLAGERS have had calls for a ban on medium and heavy good vehicles in Higham turned down by the council.
Tensions flared at an area forum meeting on Monday when councillors and members of the public were told by the council's strategic transport leader nothing could be done to alleviate traffic levels.
Residents have asked for a complete ban on medium and heavy goods vehicles using Higham Common Road after leaving the motorway at Junction 37 along the Dodworth bypass.
In response to their concerns, the council has carried out a survey of goods vehicles flows and monitored volumes of medium and heavy goods vehicles on the road.
At the meeting, planning and transportation official Paul Fell, said the level of HGV traffic needed to trigger a complete ban would have to ten per cent of the total traffic flowing through Higham. According to the survey, the percentage of HGVs in the village did not rise above the two per cent mark.
