CAWTHORNE brass band is hoping to raise the roof with its performances next year - literally.

The band held the first of many concerts on Monday this week to try to raise enough money to buy roof tiles for the new bandroom which is being built at the back of the village hall.

The band has had no facilities in the village to rehearse in or store equipment, and has been based at Silkstone Common Methodist church for the last four years.

Work to the band room started earlier this year and it is now up to roof level but band secretary Elvin Athey says members need to raise a further £3,500 to buy and fit the stone roof tiles.

He added: "These tiles are sold by the weight at a cost of £490 per tonne and being rather heavy and dense you don't get many for your money."
