THE heartbroken owner of a garage destroyed in a fire said he will strive to continue with his plan to drive across Europe in a self built Land Rover.

Bruce Riley and his daughter Sarah were receiving sponsorship for a journey across 24 countries and 24 ice passes before the blaze at the Total 4x4 garage.

Residents had to be evacuated and more than 30 fire fighters were called to the scene on Pitt Street, Darfield last month.

At first the fire was linked to four arson attacks on vehicles which took place within 30 minutes of the car workshop fire but fire-fighters later said the cause was inconclusive.

Owner Bruce Riley, said watching his life burn to the ground was like losing a friend. He said the only thing that has kept him going is the thought of planning the European driving project with his trainee mechanic, daughter Sarah, 17.
