MORE than 10,000 roach were transferred to their new home in Elsecar Canal as part of a fish rescue operation by the Environment Agency.
Volunteers had spent months cleaning up the canal to make the water more fishable and were happy to accept the stock from an overcrowded pond in Sheffield.
Crowds gathered to watch an estimated 800lb of fish, each measuring up to 15cm, delivered to the canal on Wednesday.
Fisherman Bob Leach, who helped form the Heritage Angling Club, was granted the lease from the council after a long wait.
"It took us years to get the lease," he said.
