Barnsley captain Cauley Woodrow says they were 'all over the place' for the majority of their 2-0 loss at Oakwell to fellow strugglers Hull City after which caretaker Joe Laumann admitted he can understand calls for a new head coach to be appointed now.
The Reds conceded goals in both halves to a side who had not scored away since the opening day and had lost five in a row. Hull overtook Barnsley who fell to second-bottom, four points off safety.
Laumann told the Chronicle: "I can understand the fans will want a change. We didn't win today but I am thankful to be in charge for this week and the trust the club gave me. I have had great support from the boys, the fans and our CEO Khaled (El-Ahmad). What happens after I didn't even think about."
After a 13-game winless run ended on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Derby, this was one of the worst performances of the season.
Woodrow told the Chronicle: "We were really good for 15 minutes but they got a foothold in the game and we were all over the place for the rest of the game. Big spaces, big gaps. The second goal they scored, I don't remember us ever being so out of position. It was a bad day.
"We fully expected to win the game, not in an over confident way but we knew how important it was and we felt good after Wednesday. We're a very disappointed group of lads."
Laumann added: "A big big disappointment. We missed an opportunity to make a big step forward. We had a good start for 15 minutes but, after conceding, we lost our rhythm. In the second half we put pressure on them but we weren't decisive in the last third. We are very disappointed.
"It's not easy to play three games in a week and to manage freshness and energy. We looked tired but we cannot blame this because Hull also had three games.
"If you have a run like we had, you are not stable after one win. We will go home have a couple of days off then come back and regroup."
Laumann dropped Callum Styles and Mads Andersen to the bench after they returned from injury to play important roles in the win over Derby. Laumann said: "Mads did great for two games but he was injured for four months. It was too big a risk. Stylesey did a good job on Wednesday but we didn't take any risk. They felt tired."
Laumann took Devante Cole off at half-time after he was Barnsley's best player. The caretaker said: "It was tactical. We wanted to find something that could keep us going. Victor did a good game last game. We lacked a couple of things but it was not him (Cole), it was just a decision."
Obbi Oulare was not in the squad. Laumann said: "He's not injured but he didn't feel that good and we wanted everyone at 100 per cent."
