THE repair bill of £265,000 for a retaining wall at High Hoyland will be sent to the government by way of a claim following the 2007 floods.

The wall on Bank End Lane, which reaches 3.5m (more than 11 feet) in places has deteriorated over many years, but suffered further damage during the floods and the council says it is potentially dangerous.

It holds back some farm land above the road and footpath.

Barnsley council plans to buy some of the farm land, possibly using its compulsory purchase powers, to reshape it into a slope so the wall can be taken away. The footpath will be widened and improved with the works.

The scheme will be included in the claim to the Department of Transport for flood damage, but if this is refused, a back-up agreement has been approved to fund it through the council's own transport plan budget.
