A THURNSCOE man is in line for a music award - but is relying on the public vote.

Mike Collins, 48, of School Street has penned a tribute to comedy legend Norman Wisdom which has been entered into the Shure Creative Award for Singer/Songwriters.

The song tells of the laughter Norman produced through his films and the sadness that he now suffers from Alzheimers in a care home on the Isle of Man.

Voting for the winner is done by the public on the internet.

Mike, studying for a BA (Hons)in Popular Music at University Campus Barnsley said: "I'm hoping the people of Barnsley will get behind me and perhaps even help me win.

"I grew up watching Norman’s films in black and white on Saturday morning television, and they had a great effect on me. I first decided that I wanted to sing, when I heard Norman sing 'Don’t laugh at me, cause I’m a fool'..

"I can’t bear the thought of Norman not remembering who he is and what a great career he had. I want the young people to know what a great man he is."

A shortlist of 11 will be put forward when voting finishes on May 15.
