A WOMBWELL brewery has won a national award for its version of Barnsley Bitter.

Staff from Acorn Brewery were celebrating on Tuesday when they were given the ‘Champion Beer of Great Britain’ title at the National Beer Festival in London.

Owner David Hughes, 38, said it was the best achievement in the brewery's three-year-history.

"We supply Barnsley Bitter to pubs all over the country. We found out we’d reached the finals but had to keep quiet about it until the festival.

“It was nerve-wracking though on Tuesday but to be honest we weren't expecting to win. I thought we might have got a mention but never expected to be the winners.

“There were brewers from all around the country so it’s done our name good. We’ve come on leaps and bounds recently."

David was made redundant when Elsecar Brewery went into liquidation in 2003. He bought a ten barrel brewing plant and starting producing his own ale using the same yeast strains used by the Oakwell brewery.

Acorn now has five staff and brews three permanent beers: Barnsley Gold, Old Moor Porter and Barnsley Bitter. In its first year Barnsley Gold won the Oakwood real Ale festival in Rotherham and Old Moor Porter has since won eight awards.
