FIRE CREWS are risking their lives fighting a series of fires at some derelict council offices.

Three appliances and the aerial ladder platform were called to Park Road at Worsbrough on Thursday afternoon for the second time in six months.

They searched the building to see if anyone was trapped and managed to put the fire out before it escalated but last time they were called out the roof collapsed while fire-fighters were inside.

A fire spokesperson said: "The fire was at the back of the building and to be honest I just got some breathing apparatus wearers out when the roof collapsed.

"We are still risking our lives searching for people in there because this time we didn't know if there was anyone inside. My staff did an excellent job dealing with it before it escalated."

It is believed the fire had been smouldering for days in an upstairs room, smoke was coming from the eaves and the remains of the roof were on fire.

The building is now privately owned but efforts to secure it are not working.

He added: "It has been boarded up but not well enough, it is a nuisance and wide open."
