A NEWSPAPER club has been set up at Brierley Primary School to try to improve reading and writing.

The Brierley Chronicle has been created by teacher Faye Simpson with the help of key stage two pupils (seven to 11-year-olds).

Faye said: "We wanted to help improve reading and writing and a good way for key stage two children to do that would be to produce a newspaper and sell it throughout the school for all the children." Pupils had to 'apply' for positions and 20 were selected.

They also chose the name of the paper and will have 'by-lines' on their articles.

Faye said one newspaper would be produced every half term and the group, which meets on a Tuesday after school, has written to local businesses for sponsorship and advertisements.

The team working the IT suite at school will print it using the computers and Faye has given them 'press books' to jot down notes throughout the week.

Faye added: "It contains a jokes page, puzzles, a competition to design a new kit for the school sports team. And there is an article about our visit to the Barnsley Chronicle."

Teachers will also submit for publication the best piece of work from their class.
