FREE union flags for the troops' homecoming parade are being given away to anyone who buys the Chronicle outside WH Smith this morning.
Readers can proudly wave them during the march by the Light Dragoons on Monday to celebrate their return from Afghanistan.
The Chronicle is showing its support to the cause by giving away a flag with every copy sold on Cheapside.
About 200 soldiers will march through the town before receiving the freedom of the borough in recognition of their heroic services to the community.
Over 1,500 school children are lining the streets around the town hall to show their appreciation of the soldiers.
Mayor Coun John Parkinson said he was delighted with the response from the town's schools, pubs and businesses.
"All the schools that I have spoken to have been particularly positive in allowing classes to attend which I am really pleased about," he said.
"We know that there will be lots of adults on this memorable day and I think the children coming as well will make it especially poignant.
"It shows the respect of all age groups in Barnsley for those who are serving or have served in Afghanistan which makes me extremely proud.
"We are particularly pleased the Chronicle has supported this event and expect a massive turn out because of the publicity it has received. I expect to see a lot of flag wavers on Monday."
Freedom of Borough is the highest civic honour and was originally performed in Barnsley 1979 for the 13/18 Hussars.
The regiment is stationed in Norfolk but recruits in Yorkshire and the North East so a large number of soldiers are from Barnsley.
The soldiers will be joined by the Band of the Light Cavalry and accompanied by military vehicles during the forty-minute procession.
Roads will be closed as the parade sets off from Churchfield at 12.15pm, and will march down Church Lane and onto Church Street before standing to attention outside the town hall.
It will move down Market Hill, into Queen Street, Cheapside, New Street, Island Corner, Wellington Street and Peel Square, eventually returning to the town hall for a civic reception.
