BARNSLEY will continue its cultural programme despite missing out on the final shortlist for the first UK City of Culture, organisers have vowed.

The town failed to make the final four of the competition with Sheffield, Birmingham, Norwich and Derry picked ahead of Barnsley.

The winner will become a focus for national attention in 2013 and would host high-profile media events like the Brits as part of its year in the spotlight.

Director of development Ann Gosse,

"We are going to work through the programme although the type of money we use will be different as we don't get the national funding.

"We are still going to do a major push on culture in Barnsley and keep our little red dog (the bid's logo). "We've had some good fun and a great public response to him."
