MEMORIES has, once again, succeeded in discovering the history of an old photograph.
It is of a group of ladies and had recently come to light when Carol Matthews was sorting through a number of old family photographs.
Her grandmother, Edith Wroe, who lived at 56, The Green, Dodworth, is on the far left of the back row.
Edith was born in 1890 and died in 1962.
But, Carol had no idea where the photograph was taken, or for what reason. We were delighted, therefore, to hear from Maureen Westwood (nee O’Connor), also formerly of Dodworth, that she had seen the photograph in the Chronicle and immediately recognised it as one which was taken when she spent two weeks at a convalescent home in Mablethorpe in 1955.
Maureen was 16 and was working at the Co-op when she was taken ill and had to go into hospital.
She was sent to the Mablethorpe convalescent home to help her recuperate from her illness.
She and Mrs Wroe, who she remembers well, were the two people from Barnsley in the group which travelled by coach to the Lincolnshire seaside resort. The other ladies were from Sheffield and Chesterfield.
Maureen is second from the right on the back row wearing a pearl necklace. She is now 71.
She told us that the photograph brought back many happy memories as she became friendly with the two girls to her right who were also 16.
