THE CO-OP is threatening to take legal action over a controversial deal to develop a new Tesco supermarket in Barnsley.

The proposal to build a supermarket in the middle of Penistone has been dragging for more than ten years, amid arguments over the precise plans, location and disputes over land.

But this week the Co-op, incensed to hear a property developer had been buying up land around the site, is considering taking the council to court over the move. They say it contradicts a decision made by the council in 2003, to acquire all of the site itself and then put it on the open market.

The Co-op have been waiting until that happened before making a bid and as a result were “mystified” to hear last month that an agreement had been reached between Dransfield Properties (who plan to sell to Tesco) and the council.

It is now considering turning to the courts to force the council to revert back to its original decision.
