THIEVES stole more than £100 from the till at a sandwich shop after allegedly spiking the owner’s coffee with a date rape drug.

Ian Ellison, 50, of Elley’s on Tennyson Road, Monk Bretton, recalls talking to two customers and then coming round in hospital.

He was setting up shop alone on Monday at about 6am when he says two ‘cockneys’ came in for breakfast.

Ian said: “I was still drinking my coffee while I was setting up, and I put it down on the counter like I always do. I’d been back in and out of the kitchen, taking sips of my coffee. Then I remember one of them saying ‘how’s your coffee taste?’

“That’s the last thing I remember. Next thing I know I’m in Barnsley Hospital. They’d emptied my till of £130. I’d seen them twice before over that week or so. They must have been checking the place out or something.” Full story in this week's Chronicle.
