HOME helps were in tears after being told by unions that up to half their jobs are being cut.

Responsibility for home visits will pass from Barnsley Council to the ‘independent sector’, prompting fears for the service given to old folk.

The adult social services department is being forced into cuts as it battles to bring its budget under control. There is a projected budget shortfall of £5.5m and government funding is being slashed. Unions this week passed the bad news on to staff.
