A SMALL village fish and chip ‘cabin’ has been named one of the top five chippies in the country by an expert fryer.

The Y-Pas Chippy on Churchfield Lane, Kexborough, is included by a book written by Mark Petrou. Shop owner Brent Watson, 43, of Royston, said he was delighted at the accolade – especially as it came from a fellow fryer.

He said: “The other four shops named in the book are big flagship fish and chip restaurants. I feel quite humbled by it. It’s fantastic for us.”

Brent has been running the shop 19 years, with his wife Anne, after taking over from his father, Ken. He said the success was down to insisting on qualtiy ingredients.

“It’s about quality over everything and doing it the same every time. We stick to a strict regime of doing things properly and don’t penny pinch.

“We want to stand and be proud of what we sell.”

Mr Petrou’s book ‘Fish and Chips – a national treasure’, states: “The shop is still a humble little cabin but, trust me, it has absolutely everything you would hope to find in chip shop heaven.”
