A film with footage of a miners' parade through Barnsley has been discovered after more than 40 years.

Jack Woodcock, of Locke Avenue, Barnsley, unearthed the old cine film from his loft. He had forgotten it existed but remembers it was filmed sometime 1960s when he lived at the top of Racecommon Road.

The clip shows thousands of miners marching up the road towards Locke Park for a miners’ rally. Jack, 76, said: “I only found it a week or two ago. I lost my wife last year and my daughter asked if I had any old pictures.

The films have been put onto a DVD for Jack by Dave Cherry, of Harborough Hill Road. Dave is working with the archive service to put other old films on DVD.

He says there is footage of the 1937 visit of King George to Barnsley but a 16mm cine projector is needed to copy it.

If anyone has a projector to sell or loan, contact Dave: 219614, 07766920159, or e-mail davecherry@blueyonder.co.uk.

The video has no sound.
